Although the summer solstice is common and other nations celebrate it, in Latvia on the night of June 23-24, people praised the fertility god Janis. This day was considered a magical preparation for future harvesting. In Latvia, traditionally, Name Day is celebrated almost more than a birthday. On June 23, name Liga celebrates its name day, and on June 24 - Janis. Liga’s day was dedicated to collecting herbs and was called Grass Day.
