This practice, called “souling,” was believed to help the souls of the dead find rest, blending superstition with community festivity. Mischief, or “tricks,” was also part of the custom, as some would play pranks if they received nothing in return. The tradition reflected both piety and playful cunning, merging the sacred and the secular in a lively medieval celebration.

People believed that on the night of October 31st, the boundary between the living and the dead grew thin, allowing spirits to roam the earth. To ward off evil spirits, villagers lit bonfires and wore disguises or masks to confuse wandering ghosts.
With the spread of Christianity, Samhain blended with All Hallows’ Eve, the night before All Saints’ Day.
Over time, many customs—like souling (going door to door for food in exchange for prayers for the dead)—laid the foundation for modern trick-or-treating.
