Michaelis wird auch Fest der Erzengel, Fest der Heiligen Michael, Gabriel und Raphael und Fest des Heiligen Michael und aller Engel genannt. Es wird von der römisch-katholischen und der anglikanischen Kirche gefeiert und wurde zuerst in Europa begangen.
Michaelis wurde erstmals im 5. Jahrhundert gefeiert, als zu Ehren des Engels Michael eine Basilika an der Via Salaria, einer Straße wenige Kilometer außerhalb Roms, erbaut wurde. Die Feierlichkeiten begannen am Vorabend des Festes, dem 29. September. Seitdem ist der 29. September ein Tag, der der Verehrung des Engels Michael und der anderen Erzengel gewidmet ist.
Im Mittelalter war Michaelis gleichzeitig der Heilige Tag der Verpflichtung, aber diese Tradition wurde im 18. Jahrhundert abgeschafft. Das Ereignis markierte auch das Ende des Erntejahres. An Michaelis verbringen Familien den Tag damit, Gutes zu tun, zu tanzen, zu singen und am Ende des Tages ein Festmahl mit frisch gebackenem Brot, gebratener Gans, gefüllt mit Kartoffeln, Gemüse und Kräutern, zu genießen.
