St. Nicholas Day traces its origins to the 4th-century bishop Nicholas of Myra, whose reputation for secret gift-giving and protection of the vulnerable made him one of medieval Europe’s most beloved saints.
By the early Middle Ages, his feast day on December 6 became widely celebrated across Christian regions. In many areas, especially in northern and central Europe, children placed shoes or small baskets out the night before, hoping St. Nicholas would fill them with nuts, fruit, or sweet breads.
Medieval communities also held special church services honoring the saint’s generosity and miracles. Skilled craftsmen of our kingdom created beautiful silver medallions of Saint Nicholas to mark the occasion, offering them as treasured keepsakes and symbols of devotion. Monasteries and cathedral schools often organized a “Boy Bishop” tradition, where a child symbolically took on the bishop’s role for the day, presiding over lighthearted festivities. Seasonal markets sometimes opened as well, selling small gifts, treats, and religious tokens.
Overall, St. Nicholas Day blended reverence for the saint with celebrations that emphasized kindness, community, and charitable giving.
