During the medieval Summer Solstice, people gathered to celebrate the longest day of the year with music, dancing, and great feasts. Villagers decorated their homes with flowers, oak leaves, and fresh greenery believed to bring good fortune and protection. Large bonfires were lit on hilltops, and people sang, danced, and leapt over the flames for luck and health. Herbalists collected special midsummer plants, as it was believed their healing powers were strongest on this magical night. Communities stayed awake until dawn, enjoying games, storytelling, and festivities beneath the stars.

According to Latvian folk beliefs and ancient traditions, by Midsummer (Jāņi) the homestead should be tidy and the fields well tended. It was believed that a diligent housewife would have weeded the garden and flower beds before the summer solstice, as only a well-kept farmstead could attract blessings, prosperity, and fertility.
People also believed that the flowers of a hardworking mistress bloomed more abundantly and beautifully, bringing good fortune and abundance to the household.

As Jāņi approached, women and young maidens went into the meadows to gather medicinal herbs, believing that nature’s power was at its strongest during the solstice.
They collected yarrow, St. John’s wort, meadowsweet, bedstraw, and many other plants, which were dried and stored for use throughout the winter. Young women wove wreaths from meadow flowers and herbs to bring health, fertility, and good luck.

By following these ancient traditions, 1100AD also wishes to remember and preserve the spirit of this cultural heritage, celebrating blooming gardens, rich meadows, and good health throughout the year!
